STORY: After more than twelve years studying the deafness of 500 people
around the city of Cartago, in Costa Rica, scientists have mapped a
particular gene that might explain inherited forms of hearing loss.
The 500 are the descendants of an 18th century landowner and the
inherited deafness manifests in about fifty percent of the families'
children after puberty.
