On the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri, I visited the sacred Dodda Sampige Mara located inside the dense forests of Biligiri Ranganatha Hills in Chamarajanagar district, Karnataka.
This place is not just a tree — it is a divine symbol of Lord Shiva for the local tribal communities. The gigantic Sampige (Champak) tree, believed to be centuries old, stands tall in the middle of the forest, radiating spiritual energy and natural beauty.

• Forest permission is granted only once a year during Maha Shivaratri.
• Mostly local tribal communities are allowed to participate in the pooja rituals.

Riding through the forest roads of BR Hills on this sacred day felt surreal. The mist, wildlife surroundings, and spiritual chants created an unforgettable atmosphere.
Being part of this once-a-year spiritual gathering was truly a blessing. The devotion of the tribal people, the untouched beauty of the forest, and the divine presence of Dodda Sampige Mara make this one of Karnataka’s hidden spiritual wonders.
