In this video, we'll discuss the Australian Open's UNPAID worker problem.
The Australian Open is one of the biggest and most prestigious tennis tournaments in the world, and as such, it attracts a lot of money. Unfortunately, a large group of "workers" are not being paid despite long hours, a high pressure environment, their counterparts at other tournaments do get paid AND their predecessors did too.
In this video I will discuss why I believe why they should end the exploitation of UNPAID workers at the Australian Open. The ball kids at the Australian Open don’t get paid and yet they have to go through a full on competition to even get selected, they have to be at the tournament for 8 hours a day, they go through thorough training and have to work lead up tournaments to perfect their skills and while working their performance is assessed by a supervisor after each match. The feedback is pretty hard with critiques of how perfectly they tuck their thumbs and heaven forbid they show any emotion while working and its normal for them to cop a spray from at least one player.
And yes they are allowed to do this because the ball kids are considered volunteers and they do want to be there, but the tournament could spare a few dollars for their hard work.
To be clear there are no allegations of legal wrongdoing here and they are "volunteers".
