Artist's Studio Visit, Sicily.
In August 2021, it was my very good fortune to visit the city of Siracusa in Sicily. On the enchanting island of Ortigia, artist Andre Chisesi, has his atelier and a gallery space. His work is archetypal Retromodernism. Using techniques he has developed over time, Andrea builds up layers of paint, photographic material, and scraps of posters he collects from the streets of cities he visits. The result is a 'fusion' of the past, the present, of icons and of the streets. His work conveys his perception of the local history that surrounds and inspires him, and carries him forwards on a journey to uncover and celebrate the imperfections that make objects unique.
Andrea's work has been exhibited in: La Versiliana di Pietrasanta, Royal Palace of Caserta, Catacombs of San Gennaro - Napoli, Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa - Palermo, Triennale di Milano, Piazza Duomo di Milano, Superstudio Milano, Munich, Biennale di Venezia, Wynwood Art Center Miami, and the OXO Bargehouse - London (among others!).
