Our liver, along with the kidneys, is the most important detoxification organ. Bile pigments, steroid hormones (sex hormones), and their breakdown products are not water-soluble and cannot be directly excreted by the kidneys. The same applies to environmental toxins that we ingest through food, as well as medications and drugs such as alcohol.

Detoxification in the liver is a biochemical transformation that occurs in two steps. First, a conversion reaction takes place in which the substances are made reactive and water-soluble. In phase two, these metabolites are bound to functional groups, making them water-soluble and excretable. They can then be excreted via the kidneys or bile.
