Origin of the Breed
When giant, hairy-legged chickens were brought to the American continent from India, local breeders were inspired to develop a similar breed in their homeland. They decided to cross Malayan Game hens with Cochin hens. The result was a magnificent bird with a luxurious appearance and high productivity.
The new breed was initially called the Chittagong, and the line was registered in 1874. By the early 20th century, these birds had gained numerous fans not only in America but also in Europe. At that time, the birds were used for both meat and eggs. An adult rooster weighed 6-7 kg, and a hen 4.5 kg, so a single bird yielded a lot of meat.
