Why Does February Get Only 28 Days? Blame Ancient Rome
Why is February the only month with just 28 days? Why does every other month get 30 or 31 days while poor February has to wait four years for one extra day?
The answer is not a modern mathematical rule. It is a historical leftover from ancient Rome.
The earliest Roman calendar was very different from the one we use today. It did not originally include January and February in the same way, and later calendar reforms had to force a lunar-based system into a year that roughly followed the seasons.
February became the awkward leftover month.
In the Roman calendar, many months were given odd numbers of days because odd numbers were considered fortunate. To make the total number of days add up, one month had to receive an even number. February, associated with purification rites and the end of the Roman year, became the shortest month with 28 days.
Julius Caesar later reformed the Roman calendar to make it more consistent with the solar year. The new Julian calendar used 365 days, with an extra day added to February every fourth year. This was necessary because Earth takes a little more than 365 days to complete one orbit around the Sun.
The modern Gregorian calendar refined that rule. A leap year usually occurs every four years, except century years that are not divisible by 400. That is why 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 and 2100 are not.
One popular story claims that Emperor Augustus stole a day from February to make August as long as July. It is entertaining, but historians do not support it. February was already the shortest month before Augustus.
