Valve is Fighting Back Against Xbox

Xbox isn’t doing a mid-gen refresh

Instead they’re killing off the cheaper home console and reverting to what Sony and Nintendo used to do which is have a strong home console and a weaker handheld

Valve doesn’t seem to be worried as nobody would choose this handheld with the express purpose of playing Steam Games

And if you want to play Xbox games on Deck, you have to install Windows or stream them

But Valve is building themselves a little insurance by converting Proton to work with ARM

SteamDB lists "proton-arm64ec” in the latest version

ARM is essentially Microsoft’s competitor to Apple’s M-chips and it does the same thing in the sense that it emulates Windows apps

Valve making Proton compatible with ARM essentially gives them a proprietary way to emulate Steam Windows games on ARM which would circumvent the built-in ARM emulation in the case that Microsoft blocked Valve or had degraded performance

So if the Microsoft handheld uses an ARM chip instead of an AMD chip, theoretically you’d be able to run Steam games on it which would be awesome

The idea with Game Pass is to defend against the fact that people spent the last gen building up Steam and PS4 libraries and not so much Xbox libraries

If you sub to Game Pass, you have the entire Xbox library instantly and forever as long as you pay

I would prefer to continue paying for games on Steam so if Proton works on ARM I wouldn’t have to sub to game pass or buy individual Xbox games which would be awesome

GTA V is Busted on Deck

It’s been in the top 20 on Steam for 2 years now

The latest GTA V update added BattleEye and it’s a version that’s blocked by the Deck

It’s bizarre since there is a version of BattleEye that works on Deck

This feels extremely shady to me and even though you can play single player still, the big reason GTA V stays in the top 20 on Deck is because of GTA Online
