How to choose a water heater or boiler?
Learn everything you need to know about water heaters in 5 minutes.
We'll explain how to choose the right volume, power, shape, and even the type of heating element.
1. The first factor is volume. One person uses about 20 liters of water from a water heater for a shower. Washing dishes requires 10 liters. Based on this, we can calculate each specific case. For two people living in an apartment, we recommend a tank capacity of at least 50 liters, and preferably 80 liters. For three people, choose at least 80 liters, and ideally 100 liters.
2. The second factor is power. This determines the time it takes to heat the water in the tank. Higher power means faster heating. The power of domestic water heaters ranges from 1.5 to 3 kilowatts. This is approximately a 30-60 minute difference in heating speed. However, this is an important consideration depending on the installation location of the water heater, especially in an apartment building with old wiring. Older water heaters aren't designed to handle an additional 2-3 kilowatts of load. In that case, it's better to sacrifice water heating speed and choose a lower-power boiler, or one with a smart heating system.
3. Another important parameter is the heating element. It can be either closed or open. More commonly, it's called a dry or wet heating element.
A wet heating element quickly forms scale. This reduces its efficiency, requiring maintenance.
With a dry heating element, things are different. It's the same copper heater, but it's housed in a special enamel-coated flask, doesn't come into contact with the water, and the heating element is virtually free of scale. This type of water heater is more expensive, but it's less prone to repairs and breakdowns.
4. Boiler controls also come in two types: mechanical and electronic. The first option is the simplest and most durable. However, it doesn't allow you to fully control the water heating—it only allows you to roughly set the desired heating level. Electronically controlled water heaters are a different story. You can set the temperature down to the degree. The volume of heated water is clearly displayed, and there are even various smart modes. These allow the device to analyze the time of day when water consumption is highest and heat the water precisely for those times.
