Time+ Section and Notation in Architecture
This guest lecture is an introduction to the concepts and techniques for sectional and time-based analyses in architectural drawing. The section is an architect’s tool to describe and interrogate the spatial moments of our work, allowing us to analyse and understand its many potentials. The lecture will culminate in a demonstration on sectioning techniques, and other time-based representation/analysis methods.
Josh has been practicing architecture for over 20 years; he is an NCARB certified, licensed architect and was LEED-certified in 2009. In addition to his professional practice, Josh is an Associate Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation.
Prior to starting his practice in 2016, Josh was the Design Director at Toshiko Mori Architect, where he led a range of institutional, commercial and residential projects during his 11 years with the firm. He also worked with both Diller, Scofidio + Renfro and Maya Lin Studio. At DS+R, Josh was a project architect for the redevelopment and renovation of the Juilliard School of Music and 65th Street/North Plaza Public Spaces project at Lincoln Center.
In this lecture, he starts by reviewing the concept of time as it relates to contemporary architecture before discussing the section, because he believes the cataloguing and notation of time had a significant influence on how we think about sectioning. And he will also talk Lincoln Centre as a precedent study from his own practice experience.
