The German propaganda machine of the Second World War had a dual purpose: not only to induce the population of the occupied territories to take sides, but also to carefully conceal from ordinary Germans the true state of affairs at the front. The key defeats of the Wehrmacht - near Moscow, in Stalingrad, at the Kursk Bulge - remained unknown to the majority of German citizens. The official German press painted a completely different picture of events. According to it, Stalingrad fell long ago, Moscow was practically in the hands of German troops, and the battle on the Kursk Bulge was only an insignificant episode. The only source of true information for the Germans remained the rare letters from the front that reached home.
A vivid illustration of this information vacuum is the diary of a German officer Steidle Luitpold, a participant in the Battle of Moscow. In this video I will tell you what was happening at the front and what was said to ordinary people in Germany. Friends subscribe to the channel!
