TH1 and TH2 asthma refer to two distinct immune response pathways that are involved in the development and exacerbation of asthma. These pathways are mediated by T-helper cells (Th cells), which play a crucial role in orchestrating the body's immune response.

1. *TH1 Asthma:*
TH1 cells are associated with the **cell-mediated immune response**, primarily directed against intracellular pathogens such as viruses and certain bacteria. In the context of asthma:

*TH1 Response**: TH1 cells release cytokines like **interferon-gamma (IFN-γ)* and **interleukin-2 (IL-2)**, which activate macrophages and other immune cells to clear infections.
*Inflammation Type**: TH1-mediated inflammation tends to be less prominent in classical allergic asthma. It is generally associated with **non-allergic asthma* or asthma driven by *viral infections* and *airway irritants* rather than allergens.
**Characteristics**: Patients with TH1-dominant asthma might experience more neutrophilic inflammation rather than the eosinophilic inflammation typically seen in allergic asthma. They may not have a clear allergic trigger, and their asthma might be more difficult to control with conventional therapies like corticosteroids.

2. *TH2 Asthma:*
TH2 cells, on the other hand, are central to the **humoral (antibody-mediated) immune response**, particularly in response to allergens. In the context of asthma:

**TH2 Response**: TH2 cells release cytokines like **interleukin-4 (IL-4)**, **interleukin-5 (IL-5)**, and **interleukin-13 (IL-13)**, which promote the production of IgE antibodies, eosinophilic inflammation, and mucus production.
**Inflammation Type**: TH2 asthma is the more typical form of **allergic asthma**, which is driven by environmental allergens (e.g., pollen, dust mites, animal dander). The release of IL-5, in particular, is key in attracting and activating eosinophils, which play a significant role in airway inflammation.
*Characteristics**: Patients with TH2-dominant asthma often have elevated levels of **IgE* and eosinophils. They tend to respond better to corticosteroids and biologic therapies that target specific TH2 cytokines (e.g., *anti-IL-5**, **anti-IL-4**, and **anti-IgE* therapies like omalizumab).

Summary:
**TH1 asthma**: Typically non-allergic, associated with neutrophilic inflammation, viral infections, and irritants.
**TH2 asthma**: Classic allergic asthma, associated with eosinophilic inflammation and a response to allergens.
