If we want to represent a real terrain in the Unreal Engine, the way often leads via plug-ins that import the data from various platforms. Here we will present a way of working in Unreal using only on-board resources. The preliminary work is done in a geographic information system (either QGIS or ArcGIS Pro). At the end of the video we also present a way of preparing the terrain using only the open source software Gimp.
The video is divided into the following chapters:
01:06 Download of terrain data
02:11 32bit vs. 16bit and floating point problems
04:32 Editing in ArcGIS Pro and export as PNG
10:52 Variant 2: Editing in QGIS and export as PNG
17:25 Importing terrain into Unreal
20:19 Side effects with incorrect terrain dimensions
22:11 The Unreal system of quads and components
24:28 Special features using the example of SRTM data
26:56 Calculating a terrain section exactly
35:54 Importing SRTM into Unreal
36:47 Cut out aerial image in QGIS and create material in Unreal
40:22 Importing elevation data into Unreal without GIS
Three sources for terrain data:
Worldwide SRTM data (1 arc second = approx. 30 metres): https://earthexplorer.usgs.gov
