But in all cases, the key to successful outcomes is involving Aboriginal groups in meaningful and honest consultation very early in any development proposal and maintaining respect and understanding throughout the whole process. In Australia, each state and territory has different government acts and laws, as well as Commonwealth legislation in Australia, that protect Aboriginal heritage, sites, objects and remains.
It is important to understand that whether the land is freehold or not, Aboriginal sites and objects have blanket protection under state, territory and commonwealth laws.
