Big eye fly! Not sure if the fly was a pirate when we caught this nice size bonefish in Hawaii. Andrew, the angler, made fly fishing for the Hawaiian Bonefish look easy! We fished together in June of 2018, and the image of the fish and the bite is permanently marked in my memory.
I have had the opportunity to take a lot of anglers fly fishing for bonefish in Hawaii and yet there are moments that do not go away. Like the fish Andrew caught that morning. I saw a group of fish swimming around in the channel.
Makani: "Andrew cast 10 feet to the left at 15 yards. Wait for it! He is on!"
The fight was magical. On the initial run the bonefish took about 100 yards of backing from the reel. The bonefish ran three times, and each time taking the line into the backing. Pound for pound these fish are fighters!
We took a couple pictures and a second to reflect on the moment before releasing the Hawaiian Bonefish. Another day in the life with Fly Fishing Hawaii.
Three words that best reflect the moment: 1) Pure Joy, 2) "the shake," and 3) magical.
Thank you Andrew for allowing the opportunity to help you catch a Hawaiian Bonefish.
