Hecate Chthonia is the third hypostasis of the goddess, in which she appears as the Mistress of the Underworld, the mother of the endless night, and the patroness of the dead. Gradually, you descend into the darkness—to where a coil of black dragons awakens beneath the spine. Their scales glitter, their eyes glow with a yellow light, their breath is the breath of the earth itself. And you realize: you are part of this tangle, a link in the endless chain of chthonic power.
The ritual continues until the candles on the altar burn out. All attention is focused solely on merging with the darkness, on the sensation of inner emptiness into which the Power flows. External thoughts destroy the mood, and therefore attention is the magician's primary tool. It is attention that enables the transition to deep states that reveal mystical insight. Sometimes this insight comes during practice, sometimes later—as a sudden revelation, like a "Eureka!" that changes consciousness forever.
Hecate Chthonia is not an image for beginners. This practice is for those whose will and attention have been tempered by meditation, breathing practices, and inner silence. She teaches one to see through the veil of illusion, to hear the visceral breath of the earth, and to merge with the eternal Darkness. Those who walk this path will feel filled with an ancient Power worshiped by magicians for millennia.
