You'll agree with me that the past simple and present perfect tenses cause a lot of confusion for Russian speakers learning English. Today, I'll be discussing these tenses.

Present Perfect

We use the present perfect tense when we talk about the result of an action that happened in the past. In Russian, there's no real difference, but in English, there is a clear difference.

Let's say I lost my key [and because of that, I can't get home]. In this case, I use the present perfect tense because my past action affects my present. Because I lost my key, I can't get home. In English, I would say, "I have lost my keys."

Past Simple Tenses
Let's imagine the same situation, but this time, I'm at home. Naturally, I use the past simple. Why?

Because my past action doesn't affect my present. I'm home now, meaning my past doesn't affect my present. If I couldn't get home because of that, then I would use the present perfect tense.

I lost my keys
