Us drummers tend to forget the importance of maintaining our gear but just
like your car, drums most definitely need to be looked after, an M.O.T or
‘service’ so to speak.
Night after night, gig after gig, we absolutely pound that kit. It gets covered in
blood, sweat, tears with the occasional beer spill ready for the wood chipping
to stick to it. Desperate to get home after a long night, we tend to pack away
our gear without any thought or concern.
It’s easy to ignore the accumulation of rust, pitting, dust and grime. Old,
warped, untunable drum heads. Broken snare wires, missing tension rods,
wonky lugs and out of shape hoops. With the kit packed away and stored, it’s
out of sight and out of mind. At the next gig, we’re in such a rush to set up, we
avert our eyes and fail to see / take on board the love our kit is crying out for,
instead we crack on, saying ‘it’ll be alright, sounded great last week”.
We get it. Everyone is sssooo busy, so finding the time to service the kit is not
a priority. Stripping it, Cleaning it, Oiling it, Rebuilding it, Re-Heading it and
then the thought of tuning it can be so daunting, we become irritable and
frustrated and simply don’t bother.
