I think the IRC code is the best comprehensive code.
California's residential code does not require a bedroom to have a closet. While most buyers prefer a bedroom to have a closet, the legal requirements vary by state and location.
Some other requirements for a room to be considered a bedroom include:
Size: The room must be at least 70 square feet and no less than 7 feet in any dimension.
Natural light: The room must have a natural light source that's at least 8% of the floor area.
Natural ventilation: The room must have natural ventilation through an opening that's at least 4% of the floor area.
Egress: The room must have a window for egress.
Door: The room must have a door for privacy.
Bed: The room must have a bed for sleeping.
When selling a home, it's important to be aware of the local building codes and zoning laws. For example, if a room is legally a bedroom but doesn't meet buyer expectations, you might want to advertise it as a different type of room, like a den or office, storage, office, or extra space.
