Could a cloud be a form of figurative art? Some people have trouble with the term “figurative art”. What does it look like? A portrait? A still-life? Maybe a landscape? Really, its any art that strongly represents the real world around us.
Think back to childhood. You’re laying back on the grass looking up at the sky. The clouds are moving over head and changing shape. You see a dog, a car, a person or maybe a shape forms that takes you back to a memory. Here the atmosphere has used water and air to create images the viewer can relate too.
Out of Towners is a showcase of seven Australian contemporary artists, using different mediums and individual styles, to create a visual language the comments about the world that surrounds them, and the time we’re currently in.
Hal Witney, based in Sydney Australia, uses figures, text & gestural shapes combined with bright and vivd colours, to bring his own personality through his work.
Tahlia Undarlegt, a native of WA that now works on Awabakal lands of NSW, creates cylindrical ceramic figures, depicting faces and forms that draw the viewer in to mask their own feelings and moods while following the story around. Created with ancestral roots in mind, the works remind us to not forget the people we come from.
Patrick Oates, from the Northern Rivers of NSW, portrays deep memories with brilliant highlights to create a retrospective of his own past.
Bridget Stehli, working out of the inner west of Sydney, has been known to paints cropped portraits of hard to handle images from the male sex industry, leaving just enough to know that something is going on.
Sally Bourke, based in Newcastle NSW, will be showing her gestural figures that capture the complexities of life, in a silent moment. A true gem to witness.
Benedict dos Remedios, working out of Sydney, paints a colourful close look of the beautiful macro world, that is commonly not focused on.
Nina Radonja, based in Sydney Australia, paints sometimes blurry romantic comic book moments, referencing a time with less responsibilities and risqué love.
Heath has curated these artist to show the strength of contemporary figurative art in Australia. A truly exciting time to be present in.
