The hippopotamus is the third largest land animal. Weighing in at around 3.5 tons for imposing males, and with a rather ungainly appearance, this animal is more than meets the eye. It is extremely agile underwater, while on land it can reach speeds of up to 40 km/h. Combined with its heightened aggression, these abilities make the hippopotamus one of the deadliest animals in Africa.
Despite its large size, the hippopotamus swims and walks easily in the water. On land, it trots with surprising speed. A true amphibious mammal, the outer layer of its skin (epidermis) is thin and dries out easily. It is susceptible to insect bites. Despite secretions from the epidermal glands, the skin cracks if it is not regularly moistened, in water or mud. The inner layer of the skin, 3.5 cm thick, is remarkably resistant. The hippopotamus eats mainly grass, at night. The dominant male mates with the females present in his territory. A single calf is born after an eight-month gestation period. The mother fiercely protects it. It has few known natural predators apart from big cats and hyenas. Hippopotamuses will attack humans if they feel threatened.
