Laura, played by Samara Weaving, is waiting for her Tinder date at a New York City bar. However, things take a horrific turn when her date, disguised as Ghostface, stabs her to death. Jason, played by Tony Revolori, removes the mask and takes it back to his apartment where he plans to commit new Ghostface murders with his friend Greg.
Sam Carpenter, portrayed by Melissa Barrera, attends therapy with Dr. Stone who encourages her to focus on her own trauma rather than her sister Tara's. Sam confesses to stabbing Richie Kirsch and Dr. Stone threatens to report her to the authorities. Meanwhile, Tara attends a house party with friends and is nearly attacked until Sam intervenes. However, Sam is later ostracized by the public who believe she orchestrated the Woodsboro Murders and framed Richie.
Sam is called in for questioning when her ID is found at the scene of Jason's murder along with the Ghostface mask used in the previous movie. Ghostface then attacks Tara and kills multiple bystanders, leaving another Ghostface mask at the scene. FBI agent Kirby Reed, played by Hayden Panettiere, joins the investigation and takes a special interest in the Ghostface killings.
Mindy outlines the new rules to the group and they set up a sting operation to catch the killer. However, Ghostface calls Sam, leading them to Gale's apartment where they confront the killer. Detective Bailey, who was taken off the case, later admits to orchestrating the killings with his children Quinn and Ethan as Ghostface to avenge the death of his eldest son. Sam and Tara fight them off and Sam ultimately takes revenge by repeatedly stabbing Detective Bailey while wearing her father's Ghostface mask.
Sam and Tara come to an agreement to live their own lives, while Mindy, Chad, and Kirby are taken to the hospital. Sam discards her father's mask and follows Tara into the city.
