"Creative Democracy: The Task Before Us." By John Dewey.
Dewey's poignant and pertinent 1939 essay, originally delivered by philosopher Horace Kallen in a speech on October 20, 1939. Kallen was at a dinner honoring Dewey's 80th birthday which Dewey was unable to attend. Dewey argues for democracy as a "way of life" rather than a mere mechanism of institutions and technologies. Democracy is a moral ideal which must look to experience as its guide."The task of democracy is forever that of creation of a freer and more humane experience in which all share and to which all contribute."
