📉 The E-Brake Can Fail
Your emergency brake (handbrake) relies on physical cables or electronic actuators to hold the rear wheels. Over time, cables stretch, mechanisms wear out, or rear brakes cool down and contract, or if your parked car gets hit brakes and slip. If that brake slips while your car is in neutral, your car will roll away.
🛡️ How a Gear Saves You
When you leave the car in gear (1st gear if facing flat or uphill, Reverse if facing downhill), you are using the internal compression of the engine as a secondary mechanical lock. The engine literally physically prevents the driven wheels from turning.
The Golden Rule: Always pull the handbrake tightly and slot the transmission into 1st or Reverse before turning off the engine. It’s your mechanical safety net.
