This additional brake is called the Volvo Engine Brake (VEB).
The Volvo Engine Brake (VEB) consists of two systems: the "Volvo Compression Brake" and the "Exhaust Pressure Governor." Both systems work simultaneously.
The "Volvo Compression Brake" system releases compression, while the "Exhaust Pressure Governor" system closes the exhaust gas path.
