Once introduced, the Kalashnikov assault rifle eclipsed almost all other domestic developments in small arms for more than half a century. Yet, at one point, the Soviet Union tried to create an alternative assault rifle for the army, including one based on the bullpup design. The most prominent attempt in this area was the efforts of German Korobov, who began his design work in Tula in 1939.
