It's the year 5784 in Israel. Jews celebrate Yom Kippur, and the streets of Tel Aviv become completely empty for a day. The vast city of nearly half a million people falls silent. In the evening, Jews gather for communal prayer in one of the city's main squares. However, the gathering is disrupted by a demonstration by the left, who want prayers held in public spaces.
During prayer, Jews are separated by a barrier – women pray on one side, men on the other, which many consider gender segregation. Tel Aviv authorities have only agreed to allow prayers if there is no barrier.
When we arrived at the square for the Yom Kippur celebrations, it seemed the organizers had complied with the city's order and there were no barriers. However, the next day we learned that they had erected a symbolic barrier made of Israeli flags, which was torn down by left-wing activists before our arrival. The activists ultimately prevented prayers from taking place in the city center.
