Caught Between the Byzantine and Ottoman Empires | The Despotate of Epirus (Part II)
Despite a crushing defeat at the Battle of Klokotnitsa, which saw the Despotate of Epirus essentially disappear from the historical record, it would re-emerge yet again in the 13th century. However, following a conflict with another Byzantine successor state, it had to accept Nicaean suzerainty. In time, the Byzantine Empire itself was restored, though Epirus was simply a vassal of Constantinople at this point. A series of Italian invasions then occurred, which saw Sicily occupy Epriote territory. Epirus would face still more obstacles in the coming centuries, including: countless wars, the Black Death, and a wholly new threat from the east, the Ottoman Empire. The latter of which conquered Arta in 1449, thereafter occupying the whole of Greece with the exception of a few Venetian territories.
