OpenStreetMap is a collaborative project to create a free editable geographic database of the world.
And Nominatim is a tool to search OSM data by name and address and to generate synthetic addresses of OSM points.
If you are a student and don't have money to use google maps API, or you just want to create a project about maps for fun, you can use Nominatim API to access OpenStreetMap data.
Be aware that the Nominatim service runs on donated servers and has a very limited capacity.
