How to pack a Backpack for Scouts. We want the scouts to enjoy backpacking in a safe way. Most scouts and adults over pack, this can lead to injuries and complete misery. A pack should be no more than 20-30% of the scouts body weight. This is an intro of how to accomplish this and safely back for an overnight or multi-night backpacking trip.

Packing list for Backpacking Trips- Females (can be mortified for Males)

Wear:
• Troop/Crew t-shirt
• Scout shirt/pants Optional:
• Non cotton hiking socks/underwear Money for snacks on the way
• Broke in Hiking foot wear Camera Required medicine (SM must know)
Essentials:
• A well fitting pack
• Pocket knife
• Small first aid kit (band aid, moleskin)
• Compass
• 2 full Water bottles (1 drinking and 1 cooking)
• Matches or lighter
• Flashlight or headlamp (small)
• Bug dope
• Sun Screen and Chap Stick
• Whistle
• Paracord (50 ft) (aka 550 cord)
• Plastic trash bag (Contractor bag)*
• Duct tape (3-4 wraps around water bottle)
• Sunglasses
• Trekking poles
• Mess kit (bowl, cup, fork, knife, spoon)
• Toilet kit (soap, teeth stuff, body glide, wet wipes, feminine products, non see through bag, toilet paper in Ziploc bag, small cat hole shovel) No Deodorant or smell good stuff!

Clothing:
• Lightweight raingear (jacket and pants)
• 1 fleece jacket
• 1 long john shirt (to use during the day)
• 1 long john pants (to use during the day)
• 2 pair non cotton underwear
• 2 pair non cotton hiking socks
• 1 set of long john shirt, pants, warm non cotton socks, and non cotton underwear (to only use for sleeping in)*
• Camp shoes (light weight)
• Warm hat
• Warm gloves (fleece is best)

Sleep gear:
• Sleeping bag*
• Sleeping pad
• Tent (to be shared with partner)


Sleeping bag and sleep clothing to be packed in contractor bag in bottom of pack to keep together and dry!

*MUST LEAVE ROOM IN PACK FOR TROOP GEAR AND FOOD
