Jackson Alexander Irvine (born March 7, 1993, in Melbourne) is an Australian-Scottish footballer who has been under contract with FC St. Pauli in the 2. Bundesliga since the summer of 2021.
Career
Club Career
Jackson Irvine began his football career in his hometown of Melbourne and moved from Melbourne Victory to Scottish club Celtic Glasgow in 2010. He made his professional debut there two years later, coming on as a substitute for Victor Wanyama in a league match against Hibernian Edinburgh.
For the 2013/14 season, the central midfielder was initially loaned to Kilmarnock FC until January 2014. After convincing performances, both clubs extended the loan until the end of the season. In September 2014, he went on another loan to Ross County, for whom he scored two goals in 28 league appearances. Due to his consistent performances, Ross County signed him permanently in July 2015.
After a successful season in the Scottish Highlands, Irvine moved to English Championship side Burton Albion in 2016. Just a year later, he joined Hull City, where he established himself as a regular starter. He scored ten goals in 107 appearances. After his contract expired in June 2020, he was without a club for six months before returning to Hibernian Edinburgh in January 2021. He played there until the end of the season.
In July 2021, Irvine signed with FC St. Pauli in Germany. He quickly established himself as a regular starter, making 28 appearances and scoring one goal in his first season, starting from Matchday 5.
National Team
Thanks to his Scottish father from Aberdeen, Irvine initially made three appearances for Scotland's Under-19 national team after joining Celtic in 2011. He later decided to play for his birth country, Australia.
From 2012, he was part of the Socceroos' U-20 squad and made his debut against Portugal. In October 2013, he made his first appearance for the Australian senior national team against Canada.
Irvine participated in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Australia was eliminated after the group stage, with Irvine playing in all three group matches. At the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, he was a regular starter and played in all four matches, only being substituted after 85 minutes in the first group game.
