Frontenac is a red technical grape variety obtained by crossing Riparia 89 and Lando Noir in 1983 at the University of Minnesota, USA. Registered as a variety in 1996.
Genetic formula: 25.96% vitis vinifera + 2.05% vitis labrusca + 11.00% vitis rupestris + 7.81% vitis berlandieri + 51.27% vitis riparia + 1.91% vitis lincecumii.
Ripening period - early-middle. In the conditions of Novocherkassk, Rostov region, it ripens on August 18-22.
The flower is bisexual.
The bushes are very vigorous. The bunches are small and medium, weighing 100-130 g, cylindrical-conical, loose, less often of medium density.
The berries are small, weighing 1.2-1.4 g, round, dark blue, almost black, covered with a thick waxy coating. The skin is dense, the skin is thick, the pulp is fleshy and juicy, the taste is harmonious. The juice is intensely colored (dye, tenturier).
It is distinguished by high sugar accumulation (up to 26%) and high titratable acidity of the berry juice (10-14 g / l).
The Frontenac grape variety is highly resistant to mildew, above average - to oidium, tolerant to phylloxera. Drought resistance and heat resistance are average.
The berries do not crack and are not affected by gray mold. Frost resistance according to the University of Minnesota -30 F (-34 ° C), can be grown in an uncovered own-root culture.
The yield is very high.
Direction of use: the variety is used to make wines of a rich dark ruby color, with pleasant aromas of blackberry, cherry, plum. The herbaceous aroma of V. riparia rarely appears in wines. It is often used in blends with low-acid grape varieties, and liqueur (like port) and pink wines (rose) are also made from the variety.
