OXYTOCIN

OXYTOCIN
In a period when we were suddenly no longer allowed to touch each other and had to keep a distance from each other, many people developed the phenomenon of skin hunger. A desire to hold, hug or caress each other. A desire for the cuddle hormone Oxytocin.
During this period of quarantines and social distancing, the new performance OXYTOCIN by choreographer Isabelle Beernaert was also created.
Every person needs oxytocin in everyday life to be happy. The lack of this substance had physical repercussions for many people. Through dance, Isabelle shows her observations about how we have dealt with these feelings by showing old fears and new feelings.
An empty white, sterile space, music that grabs you by the throat from the first second and six dancers who celebrate life, led by a wonderfully beautiful choreography: OXYTOCIN has become a a penetrating yet sensitive performance that shows us that the world is not as dark as it seems to be. You just have to want to see it. And feel.
Did you know?
Oxytocin is a neuropeptide that plays an important role as a hormone and neurotransmitter in establishing social contacts and having feelings of pleasure. We produce oxytocin when hugging, making love, eye contact, flirting and touching. The hormone is also produced during a loving speech and when pets are petted. It is indispensable in vulnerable matters such as maternal bonding, friendships, romance and sexuality. In short, oxytocin is the social cement that provides the necessary bonding between people. But oxytocin can also provoke aggression if it involves other than one's own group, and if it is deficient for a long time, it can also cause dependence.
This stark contrast between positive and negative effects of oxytocin is the "motivation" behind this performance.
