DENJIRO: First, let's watch a video. The water that has splashed everywhere is sucked back into a balloon. It's quite a strange video, isn't it?
This video has been reversed, but why does this clip feel so strange and discomforting to many of us?
All natural phenomena occur in one direction. This direction is determined by what is called the law of increasing entropy. The splattered water in this video will not return to its original state. This is why reverse playback videos tend to make people feel a bit weird.
Now, let me show you another strange phenomenon. I am going to pour some laundry starch into this double-layered container. I'm now adding ink to it. When I turn the interior container... the liquid moves and the ink is mixed into the laundry starch.
What do you think will happen when I turn the interior container the other way around? Let's try it.
The ink returns to its previous state, and the video looks as though it has been reversed. The liquid inside is very sticky, so the ink has not actually been mixed and is simply being stretched like rubber. It hasn't mixed with the starch, so it can go back to its previous state. That's why we get this strange phenomenon that seems to go against the law of increasing entropy.
Let's try this experiment on a flat surface. The ink looks like it has been mixed in, but the word "Den" has appeared!
These two videos feel strange to us because humans intuitively understand that ink that has been mixed cannot be returned to its previous state.
