Like the Souls series, the Elden Ring setting represents Elden Ring is a Western-inspired fantasy game[3]. According to the game's description on the Bandai Namco website, Elden Ring takes place in the Betweenlands, a land ruled by Queen Marika the Everlasting. In the past, life in the Betweenlands depended on the Elden Ring, the titular ring from which the World Tree grows. Both rings imbued the Betweenlands with the "golden light"—a special kind of grace bestowed upon all inhabitants of the land, great and small. Bearers of the light recognized each other by the light in their eyes, and those who lost the light of grace were called the Extinguished and banished—among these exiles were the ancestors of the player character[4].
When the Ring was shattered, the demigod heroes, descendants of Marika, divided its fragments, known as the Great Runes, among themselves. They gained immense powers—each one unique; But the corruption inherent in these fragments drove them mad, and they entered into an internecine war known as the Sundering. The player character, the Extinguished One, was once exiled from the Between-earth to distant lands, but after the Elden Ring was shattered, he heard a guiding call sent to the Between-earth and sensed the grace lost by his ancestors.[4] The hero returns to claim the power of the Elden Ring and become its own ruler.[5]
