There's only one registered agent we'd pay for ourselves — file from $39: https://smallbiz.to/sMbseL
What is a registered agent for an LLC — and which one's actually worth $100–$300 a year?
TL;DR: Northwest Registered Agent is the one we use ourselves — $39 to file, $125/yr after, and they don't put your home address on a public state filing.
A registered agent is the person or service that receives official mail from the IRS and the Secretary of State on behalf of your LLC. All 50 states require one. You can technically be your own — but whatever address you list becomes public record, and if you miss a notice, you're looking at fines, legal penalties, or a shutdown.
That's the part most "what is a registered agent" videos skip: the privacy tradeoff is the whole reason you pay someone else $100–$300 a year to do it.
We've formed real LLCs across every major service in this category ($1,787 of our own money, for the record). Here's where we landed:
🥇 Northwest Registered Agent — $39 to file, $125/year renewal. Same-day document scans, virtual office address so your home doesn't end up on a public filing, and a free domain + business phone number bundled in. We formed our own Wyoming LLC through them — $289 out the door with the address service added. Filing came back in 6 days against their stated 10-business-day estimate.

🥈 Bizee — free in year one (you still pay state fees), then $199/year renewal. The Basic plan covers registered agent, articles of organization, and document scans — but you'll probably want an EIN and operating agreement, and those add-ons stack up fast. Over a 5-year window, Bizee runs about $796 vs Northwest's $548 — roughly 32% more on like-for-like math.
Honest tradeoff on Northwest: the dashboard isn't going to win any design awards. It's plain. But for the one job a registered agent service should do — receive your mail, keep your home address off public records, remind you when annual reports are due — they're the cheapest serious option on the market.
✓ $39 to file (state fees separate)
✓ $125/year registered agent renewal — vs $199–$399 elsewhere
✓ Virtual office address keeps your home off public state filings
