The Can f 1 allergen is a major protein in dog dander, saliva, and urine. It's one of the most common allergens responsible for triggering allergic reactions in people. This protein can become airborne and easily spread throughout a home, but the reason poodles get the 'hypoallergenic' title is because low-shedding = less dander being spread. That said, it doesn't mean NO dander will spread. Many would be surprised to learn that I actually am allergic to dogs! But with regular vacuuming, not touching my face after hanging with dogs, and HEPA filters, I have been okay with managing my allergies - even with a lab who sheds a lot :) It's always important to hang out with the breed of your choice before committing to a new family member!
