In this video, Anthony Sequeira covers storage virtualization. Virtualization isn't a new technology, but the excitement and fervor around its use has grown a lot in recent years. In this recorded live webinar, Anthony explains how to enhance storage networking with virtualization.
Back in the days of mainframes, it was possible to segment physical mainframes with software so that different teams were accessing different areas of the drive, so virtualization is not a novel idea.
But using virtualization in storage is relatively new — and it's exciting. Because as it becomes more versatile and powerful it supports server virtualization and high availability (HA). Storage virtualization eases administration and automation, and it allows for consolidation. It also enables tiering while providing data protection and disaster recovery.
In virtualized storage, what can be virtualized runs the gamut, from files, to blocks of data representation and even objects. In the world of Direct Attached Storage or SANs, we take a block of info and virtualize its location. Entire file systems' locations get virtualied in NASs. And even tapes, tape drives and tape libraries get virtualized.
It's hard not to get excited about storage virtualization, watch as Anthony sketches out its trajectory and future.
