The temple compound is located approximately 17 kilometres northeast of the city of Yogyakarta.

The reconstruction of the main Shiva temple was completed in 1953 and inaugurated by Indonesia's first president Sukarno.
Since the reconstruction of the main temples in the 1990s, Prambanan has been reclaimed as an important religious center for Hindu rituals and ceremonies in Java.
Originally there were a total of 240 temples standing in Prambanan.
