Warren Spector joined us at SIEGE2015 to discuss "What Video Games Can Learn from Other Media ... What We Can't ... and What We Shouldn't."
Spector's keynote address compares video games and media including movies, television, comic books and others. Join us as we look at ways in which linear media have influenced video game creators, sometimes to their benefit but often to their detriment. Using many examples, Spector examines how emulating other media has affected our ability to reach our potential as the unique medium we can and must become. Expect to gain a better idea of how games fit into the larger media and cultural landscape. Leave with at least one man's views of what makes games unique and what sorts of games that implies we "should" be focusing on.
Spector earned a master’s degree in radio-television-film from UT Austin in 1980. Heis a 30-year veteran of the video game industry who has worked on more than 20 production teams as designer, director or producer. He is best known for his work on the "Ultima," "System Shock," "Deus Ex" and "Disney Epic Mickey" game series.
Spector directs the Denius-Sams Gaming Academy at UT-Austin, designing the curriculum and serving as a part-time instructor. Spector partnered with donors, Paul Sams (Blizzard COO) and Wofford Denius (Cain Foundation) and with the Moody College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin to create this one-of-a-kind game development academy. They are supported by a development council of industry notables.
