At AIT's Center for Energy, 270 experts work on innovative energy solutions. This video highlights a study comparing different hydraulic variants in the heating and cooling system of a 24-zone office building. The variants tested include:
Pressure-dependent systems
Pressure-independent systems with two-setpoint control
Pressure-independent systems with continuous control
Electronic pressure-independent systems
Key findings from the study reveal that replacing pressure-dependent valves with pressure-independent valves using two-setpoint control reduces pump energy consumption by 1% for cooling and 5% for heating. Further, switching to continuous control reduces pump energy consumption by 15%. Utilizing intelligent control with feedback optimization and a pump optimizer leads to a significant 35% energy saving compared to continuous control and up to 50% compared to two-setpoint control.
These optimizations not only reduce electrical energy consumption but also decrease CO2 emissions by up to 7% and thermal distribution losses by up to 12%.
