PUBG Mobile banned in India along with 118 other mobile appsKey HighlightsThis is not the first ban considering the government banned a slew of apps in the first banwaveThe second banwave saw the govt banning the clones of the apps it had already banned
In a major move, the Ministry of Information and Technology has banned PUBG Mobile and 118 other mobile applications. This is the third banwave that has hit the app industry after the government made similar moves in the past.
In a statement by the Ministry, "This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure safety, security and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace
The statement explained that there were a number of complaints which were received from various sources and included reports about the misuse of mobile apps which were available on Android and iOS platforms. The complaints talked about stealing and transferring user data in an unauthorised manner to servers which were located outside of India.
"The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures," the statement said.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs has also sent in an exhaustive recommendation for blocking these malicious apps. It stated, "Likewise, there have been similar bipartisan concerns, flagged by various public representatives, both outside and inside the Parliament of India. There has been a strong chorus in the public space to take strict action against Apps that harm India’s sovereignty as well as the privacy of our citizens."
"On the basis of these and upon receiving of recent credible inputs that information posted, permissions sought, functionality embedded as well as data harvesting practices of above-stated Apps raise serious concerns that these apps collect and share data in a surreptitious manner and compromise personal data and information of users that can have a severe threat to the security of the state," the statement read.
