In Vietnam, during the anti-colonial war against France and the anti-imperialist war against the United States, in addition to conventional weaponry, local resistance movements used numerous traps with the aim of wounding and demoralizing the invading forces. Many of them are museum pieces in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), as well as in US military museums. In this video we will compile some of the traps that terrorized the French and Americans who invaded Vietnam.
These traps, along with other tactics such as the use of snakes and scorpions, created a climate of fear and turned the battlefield into a house of horrors for enemy soldiers.
Ingenious Ambush: An immersion into Vietcong guerrilla tactics.
They were quintessentially the hidden enemy in the dense jungles of Vietnam during the 1960s and early 1970s. The Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army employed terrifying traps designed to demoralize, maim and kill unsuspecting soldiers. These ingeniously cruel traps, such as punji stakes and bamboo whips, claimed thousands of lives and left many others physically and emotionally scarred. The traps exemplified the philosophy of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" by instilling fear and uncertainty among the troops, making their enemy as invisible as he was deadly. Viet Cong tactics, which included tunnels and various traps such as mines and booby traps, were intended to use their ingenuity to overcome the superior firepower of U.S. and South Vietnamese forces. Their ultimate goal was to break the enemy's will to fight through psychological warfare, constantly questioning their security and undermining their morale.
