Tuesday Tip- Blend or Digraph?
Open up just one phonics book and you’ll see tons of different phonics skills to work on. Some are obviously different from others, but some - are not so much. A few skills seem similar to each other - and one of these pairs is blends and digraphs. Here’s the difference:
Digraph:
Two letters come together to make a brand new sound
Letters s and h come together to make /sh/
Letters t and h come together to make /th/
When phoneme grapheme-mapping, digraph letters share a box because they make one sound
Blend:
Two letters come together and you hear both sounds as they roll off your tongue.
Letters b and l roll off the tongue in the word black, but you can still hear both letters
When phoneme grapheme-mapping, blend letters get separate boxes because you hear each sound.
