To get started, we need to see how much RAM your computer has in total. To do this, we want to go to the start menu and search for “System Information”. There will then be a System Information app. Open this app, and you will see an “Installed Physical Memory” text with a number next to it. This is how much RAM your computer has.
Never dedicate more than half of your installed physical memory to Minecraft. Speaking of how much RAM you should dedicate to Minecraft, how much RAM does Minecraft actually need?
Well, that depends on what you are doing. Vanilla Minecraft usually needs around 2GB of RAM, but increasing it to 4GB can be good depending on your world size and what you doing in game. If you add any mods to your game, upping your RAM to 4GB is recommended. For 50 to 100 mods, 6GB of RAM is usually good, and for over 100 mods, 8GB and in some cases 10GB or even 12GB of RAM is needed.
So now that you know how much RAM Minecraft 1.21.5 needs. How do you actually allocate more RAM to Minecraft? Well, start off by opening up the Minecraft Launcher.
Then, in the Minecraft Launcher, click on “Installations” at the top. Here you will see all of your Minecraft installations. This will work for vanilla and modded Minecraft 1.21.5 allowing you to add more RAM no matter what.
From there, click on the installation you want to add more RAM to. Then, scroll down and click “More Options”. You will then have a “JVM Arguments” text box with a bunch of stuff in it. At the beginning of this text box, you will see “-Xmx2G”. The number may different, but this is where you add more RAM to Minecraft.
For example, changing this “-Xmx4G” would set Minecraft to 4GB of RAM. If you wanted to dedicated 10GB to Minecraft, you will set it to “-Xmx10G”. Once you have set the amount of RAM you want, click on “Save”. You have now added more RAM to Minecraft!
After you have added RAM to your installation, you can play Minecraft with it normally. However, how can you see how much RAM Minecraft has once you’re in-game? Well, in game, just press F3 or FN+3 on your keyboard. This will open up Minecraft’s debug menu, and in the top right, you will be able to see the RAM dedicate to Minecraft including how much RAM Minecraft is using at that exact moment.
