FJADRARGLJUFUR CANYON ICELAND
Iceland has got some spectacular canyons, one of which is Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon in South Iceland. Fjaðrárgljúfur is a canyon with quite a unique serpent like shape and it was not well-known to visitors to Iceland until a few years ago.
Fjaðrárgljúfur is a 2 km (1.24 mi) long canyon in the South-East Region of Iceland. The canyon is about 100 meters deep and through it runs a small freshwater stream.
It’s known to be one of the most picturesque places in Iceland. It’s quickly become one of the most sought-after locations.
The Fjaðrárgjúfur Canyon was formed during the last ice age when a glacial river carved its way through soil, creating a massive canyon about 100 meters down. Even though the canyon was created at a cold period, today it’s a very fertile place with beautiful vegetation.
The fairytale like Fjaðrárgljúfur has steep tuff walls on both sides. They are believed to be about 2 million years old. The Fjaðrá River runs like a snake in between the palagonite walls and originates in the Geirlandshraun lava field. It also falls from a cliff into the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon, creating quite the scene. The river then joined the powerful Skaftá river.

Travel video of the main things saw and places visited. This was a 10 day road trip. Wanted to mainly do the Road 1 Ring Road route going counter clockwise. The camper van was not suitable for off road so had to stay on the main acceptable roads.

Iceland is the biggest part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above sea level, and its central volcanic plateau is erupting almost constantly. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence keep summers chilly, and most of its islands have a polar climate.
