If you're strong at two-digit multiplication, you can leverage that into this trick for squaring three-digit numbers ending in 5.

There are only two steps to this trick, and the first one is super simple. First, write down 25. Any number ending in 5 will end in 25 when you square it. The second step is where being strong at two-digit multiplication comes into play. You have to take the first two digits of the numbers and, treating it like its own two-digit number, multiply it by the number one greater.

The area model for multiplication gives a great way to understand why this trick works.
