STORMtracker ALERT: Excessive heat today, with strong storms late this evening

— Excessive Heat - Severe Storms - Dry Air Changes —
We have a couple of threats that we are tracking today. Firstly, dangerous and excessive heat is expected for much of the day, with low rain chances into the afternoon. Later in the afternoon and evening, a complex of strong thunderstorms may roll through the area from north to south. Any thunderstorms that develop may produce gusty winds, heavy rain, small hail, and frequent lightning.
STORMtracker ALERT - EXCESSIVE HEAT ON SUNDAY:
Sunday morning through much of the afternoon is expected to be mostly sunny and excessively hot. Temperatures will soar into the 90s after sunrise, peaking around 100 degrees. The humid and sticky air will amplify the heat. Heat index values in the afternoon will be well above 105 degrees, with some areas exceeding 112 degrees. This kind of heat is very dangerous, and precautions need to be taken to stay safe and cool.
The National Weather Service has issued an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING for parts of our area until 7:00 p.m. In this warned area, we could see heat index values near 114 degrees. Elsewhere, a heat advisory is in place with a heat index of 105-111 degrees expected.
Follow these steps to stay safe in the heat:
Drink plenty of fluids
Stay in an air-conditioned room
Stay out of the sun
Check on relatives and neighbors
If outside, wear lightweight clothing and try to complete activities early in the day. It's recommended to take breaks in air-conditioned environments during outdoor work. If someone is overcome by heat, move them to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911.
STORMS LATE SUNDAY:
In addition to the heat threat, we also expect scattered severe thunderstorms this evening. Most of the day will be dry, but isolated downpours may begin after 4:00 p.m. We'll also be watching for a complex of storms from the north that could push across our area. If this complex develops, we could see a line of storms producing gusty winds and heavy rain. The main window for storms is from 4:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. We'll keep you updated on the situation. Even if a storm complex doesn't develop, we could still see scattered storms with gusty winds.
The Storm Prediction Center has placed the northern half of the FOX10 viewing area at a level two out of five severe weather risk.
THE WEEK AHEAD:
Big changes are coming to our forecast on Monday. A “cold” front will pass through, bringing drier air. Afternoon temperatures won't drop much behind the front, but the lower humidity will eliminate heat index issues. Rain chances will also drop to zero.
Morning temperatures are expected to drop to around 70 degrees midweek, with 60s possible in some areas. Enjoy the dry air as you head to work and school!
