The allowance of ₹1,50,000 given to Members of Parliament for phone and internet expenses is a complete waste of public money, the people of India say. In today’s world, mobile and internet plans are affordable for almost everyone. Even people running small businesses or working from home manage with a fraction of that cost each year. Giving such a huge amount to MPs for something as basic as communication is unnecessary and unreasonable.
This kind of allowance shows how disconnected our leaders are from the everyday lives of citizens. Most people pay a few hundred or a few thousand rupees a month for their mobile and internet bills. Yet MPs are given lakhs for the same purpose, despite already enjoying high salaries, free housing, travel, and other allowances. It raises an important question—why should taxpayers pay such inflated amounts when the actual cost is nowhere near that figure?
There also needs to be transparency. The public has a right to know how this money is being used. Without clear records or limits, such allowances can easily be misused. It creates the impression that public funds are treated like personal benefits instead of being used responsibly.
In the end, this allowance is symbolic of a larger problem. Politicians continue to enjoy privileges that do not match the realities faced by ordinary citizens. If India wants to build trust in public institutions, such unnecessary and outdated perks must be scrapped or drastically reduced. MPs should lead by example in using public money wisely, not wastefully.
