A day in Germany's largest juvenile prison
Germany's largest juvenile detention center. Those incarcerated in the Hameln juvenile detention center are repeat offenders or have committed crimes that could result in death. The male offenders are between 14 and 24 years old. They often come from so-called "broken homes," meaning difficult family situations.
Adriana Kunz from the Caritas Association helps the teenagers and young adults get their lives back on track. The social worker provides support with debt, finding housing after release, or job hunting—everything that helps them reintegrate into society. She visits the inmates in the prison but also has an office in the city where she remains a contact person even after their release. It's not an easy job, but Adriana focuses on the offenders' future, not their past.
Pastor Anne accompanies Adriana for a day during her work at Lower Saxony's only juvenile detention center. Together they meet Mr. F., who has already served over four years. He will have completed his sentence in a month. With Adriana's help, he arranges a place in supported housing and tells Anne what he's most looking forward to.
Client Mr. G. also talks about his plans after his release. The 20-year-old is incarcerated for, among other things, attempted manslaughter. He explains to Anne the financial regulations in place at the juvenile detention center. David Lamers from the detention center shows Anne around the grounds, clarifies how and why young people end up there, and what role leisure activities play in their rehabilitation.
